The "anti-iPhone" has been released, a smartphone with a large battery, a processor from a computer, and a full-fledged Linux Debian. Photo

The Divine D smartphone, running the Debian-based Linux distribution, has been announced. It's built on a processor most commonly found in single-board personal computers. It has several features, one of which is a small screen by today's standards, making it very compact compared to modern Android and iOS phones.

A Linux computer you can take with you

The announcement of the new smartphone Divine D took place, which is radically different from everything else on the market. According to the Liliputing portal, a modified version of Linux Debian was installed on it, and as a processor, the developers used a processor from a personal single-board computer.

This is the Rockchip RK3588 processor, which was released at the end of 2020. Over the years of its existence, it has earned popularity among manufacturers and users of single-board PCs. This is an 8-nanometer chip with two clusters of cores - the first contains four Cortex-A76, the second includes a quartet of Cortex-A55. There is also a Mali-G610 MP4 video subsystem, codenamed Odin, featuring four cores and a neuromodule with a performance of 6 TOPS. Additionally, the processor can play and even encode 8K video, and work with LPDDR5 memory up to 32 GB. As CNews reported, this CPU is often used in laptops.

Smartphone from Africa

The company DawnDrums SARL from Tunisia (a country in North Africa) is currently working on Divine D. The goal of the project, according to the developers, is not even to create a smartphone itself, but an “open-source mobile system” that will run based on the Linux operating system called DawnOS.

According to available information, the smartphone will be very compact, since its screen will have a diagonal of only 5.5 inches. For comparison, the most compact Apple iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch screen, the ultra-compact Samsung Galaxy S25 has a 6.2-inch screen by today's standards, and the diagonal of the vast majority of current smartphones has long exceeded 6.7 inches.

At the same time, the screen in Divine D is not a cheap IPS matrix, but a full-fledged AMOLED like on expensive smartphones. Its resolution is Full HD or 1920x1080 pixels, which indicates a classic 16:9 aspect ratio.

Pocket Debian

Not much is known about the firmware of the upcoming smartphone yet. It will be called DawnOS, and it is a modified version of the Mobian Linux distribution.

Linux у смартфоні доповнено апаратними функціями захисту конфіденційності Hardware privacy features complement Linux on your smartphone.

In turn, Mobian is a separate version of the desktop and a very popular Linux distribution, Debian, which is the basis of many other OSes.

DawnOS is expected to receive support for the Phosh and KDE Mobile user interfaces.

Lots of interesting things inside

According to Liliputing, the new Linux smartphone, Divine D, will be released in several configurations that differ only in the amount of built-in storage and RAM. There will be a choice of three RAM options (8, 16, or 32 GB) and two ROM options - 128 or 256 GB. There will also be the possibility of installing a microSD memory card.

The developers clearly decided to save on memory. The smartphone's processor can work with RAM not only LPDDR5, but also with the older LPDDR4x, and it is this that is used in Divine D. The mobile phone is also lacking modern fast flash memory - it has a built-in eMMC 3.1, like in the cheapest Android smartphones.

The phone will be equipped with a USB-C port for charging a 4800 mAh battery, which is approximately equivalent to the capacity of most modern smartphones. The maximum power of the supported power supply is 27 W.

Separately, there will be a 3.5 mm input for wired headphones on the case. Their wireless modules are announced as Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, GPS receiver, as well as mini PCIe/M.2 for a 4G or GSM cellular modem.

The smartphone will feature two cameras, both utilizing Sony sensors. In front, the developers will install a 12-megapixel IMX378, and on the back - an IMX586 with a resolution of 48 MP.

The developers of Divine D also emphasize privacy features, providing hardware switches for the camera, microphones, and wireless functions of the modules. The cost of the smartphone and its release date were not disclosed at the time of publication.
