A dog rushing towards its owner, greeting them with a cheerful bark, is a positive and inspiring image! However, this is only true from the outside. Being the object of a dog's adoration is not always pleasant or convenient. How can you explain to your pet that others are not happy with its hugs and that jumping on people is not the behaviour you expect from an animal? We consulted with practising dog trainers and are now ready to answer the question of why dogs jump on people, as well as give you some practical tips on how to correct this behaviour in your tail-wagging friends.
Why does a dog jump on people, and how can I stop it
Why does a dog jump on people?
In essence, there is only one reason why a dog stands on its hind legs and puts its front paws on its owner's shoulders: it wants attention. However, the attempts to establish close contact with the owner can be caused by various factors.
So, here is a list of the main reasons why dogs jump on people.
Stress
A frightened dog seeks support and, possibly, protection from its owner. Sometimes the jump is ‘performed’ in the presence of strangers to restore a sense of confidence in its own abilities, as well as to demonstrate to strangers its unity with the human.
Excitement and desire to express emotions
The joy of a long-awaited walk, the excitement of a new toy, or a cat sitting on their owner's lap are all perfectly valid reasons for a dog to start jumping around a person, possibly barking.
You can tell whether a dog is nervous or happy during such actions by the movements of its tail. In the first case, only the tip moves actively, and the tail itself will remain noticeably lower than the level of the back.
Greeting
Greeting your owner when they return from work with loud barking and a sudden rush is a sacred duty. Don't forget that in the dog world, it is customary to greet and get acquainted by sniffing. But since a person's face is almost always out of reach of a pet, a classic jump in height helps to remedy the situation. We will tell you how to teach your dog not to jump when greeting someone below.
Unspent energy
A lack of physical activity causes dogs to release excess energy in any way they can. If your pet doesn't get enough exercise or doesn't exercise productively, be prepared for such outbursts. Bored dogs behave in the same way, and if no one is around, they may jump on furniture and walls.

Hello, let's play!
How to stop a dog from jumping: 6 effective methods
We often provoke animals into misbehaving by being amused by a puppy's playful jumping. When the dog grows up, such behaviour is no longer amusing. Especially if you are wearing expensive clothes and your 40-kilogram pet has just run through a dirty puddle. Therefore, in order not to lose your dog's trust and not to pay for re-training with your nerves and dirty clothes, dot the i's and cross the t's while your dog is still a puppy.
And please, no leniency, because it's simply ‘poor little thing.’ Small concessions don't work; they confuse and disorient the dog. Act consistently. If the animal lives in a family, every member of the household will have to refrain from hugging it. Otherwise, the dog will become confused and will no longer understand what is expected of it. Make it a rule to pet the puppy when it is standing confidently on all four legs. If the puppy tries to put its front paws on your lap, calmly remove them and step away.
Lower the intensity of your emotional response.
The more even-tempered you are with your dog, the more restrained it will be — an old, well-known but still effective rule. Do not hug or kiss your pet when you meet it.
Stay calm. There is no need to grumble or get angry, either — dogs are excellent at reading negative emotions, but they do not always understand what they have done to deserve disapproval.
Work on irritants
This advice is relevant for owners who have a timid pet that constantly runs for support when it sees strangers. To give your puppy fewer reasons to jump on you for approval, minimise its contact with other people. For example, take your dog to a separate room before guests arrive; walk in places where you are unlikely to meet strangers.
Distraction
Recommendation from Western dog trainers on how to stop a dog from jumping on people: keep your dog's favourite treats handy so that every time it decides to jump on you, you can quickly divert its attention to food. Could you ask guests who your pet behaves this way towards to do the same? While the dog is preoccupied with the treat, people will be able to enter the apartment and settle down calmly. Gradually, the animal will lose the habit of reacting violently to the appearance of people, provided that they behave seriously and do not encourage the puppy's behaviour with encouraging phrases and affection.
Switch attention
This method works only on obedient dogs that know basic commands. Warn your pet to jump by giving the command ‘Sit!’ or ‘Wait!’ After the command is obeyed, be sure to reward the dog with affection or a treat.
Play ahead
You can use the dog's front paws as it jumps, and you can balance on its hind legs. This method is called ‘pliers.’ Then gently squeeze the paws in your hands, creating discomfort for the pet, and give a prohibitive command. Be moderate. Pulling on the paws and lifting the dog into the air is strictly prohibited, as this can cause injury due to the animal's anatomy.
Educational ignoring
How can you stop your dog from jumping on you without commands or treats? Could you show that you are indifferent to such greetings? For example, when your pet jumps, cross your arms over your chest and turn away sharply. This way, the dog will have to ‘hug’ nothingness and think about what exactly its owner does not like. Please note: this method works on young adult dogs and is not very effective on puppies.
Sometimes you may come across advice from ‘experienced’ dog owners who recommend training your pet with sedatives and a strict collar (parforce). However, these are extreme measures that should not be used without consulting a veterinarian and dog trainer. It is strongly recommended not to purchase a parforce collar unless you intend to enrol your pet in a ZKS course.
However, it is pretty helpful to pull sharply on the leash during a walk when a puppy tries to jump on a passerby. The second prohibited technique is to knock the dog to the ground after it jumps, pressing down with your own weight, thereby demonstrating your alpha status. Your pet will interpret this behaviour as aggression or an attempt to humiliate it, but will never realise that it is a training moment.
